Brock shared his sub-chasing exploits that fascinated his cousin during these outings. Over time, Brock gave Lucas a box of clippings and several sub-hunter magazines and books. Underneath the box was Brock's diary. Rimmer said, “Ambassador Morella deserves this great honor.

146Th Airlift Wing

146Th Airlift Wing

146Th Airlift Wing - Formed in August 1943 at Westover Field, Massachusetts. During World War II, the 373d Fighter Group was assigned to the European Theater of Operations (ETO) of the Ninth Air Force in Western Europe. It was equipped with P-47 Thunderbolts.

In 1961, the 146th FIW was reassigned to troop airlift service, exchanging Saber interceptors for 4-engine C-97 Stratofrighter transports. As airlift was recognized as a critical wartime requirement, the 146th was redesignated as the Airlift Wing (Heavy).

During the Berlin Crisis of 1961, the wing and squadrons were federalized on 1 October 1961. From Van Nuys, the wing increased its worldwide MATS airlift capability to meet the needs of the Air Force. On August 31, 1962, it reverted to the control of the state of California.

Strategic Airlift

Throughout the 1960s, the unit flew long-range transport missions in support of Air Force requirements, sending frequent flights to Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines, as well as during the war. In Vietnam, South Vietnam, Okinawa and Thailand.

In August 1990, the world was moving rapidly towards an armed conflict in the Persian Gulf. As of late January 1991, the 146th Airlift Wing provided more than 650 personnel to US Central Command and US Air Forces Europe, voluntarily activated, and participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Aircraft and aircrews from the 115th Airlift Squadron completed a two-month tour of duty as part of Operation Volant Pine, which saw Air National Guard C-130s replenish military airlift aircraft in Europe. In the early 1970s, the USAF's "Total Force" policy brought the wing into full partnership with its Air Force counterparts, requiring cooperation and teamwork between the Air Guard and active duty Air Force units in all phases of military operations airline.

As a result, in the years that followed, the wing's C-130s traveled to all corners of the globe, transporting troops, passengers and cargo between training missions, exercise deployments and real-world military operations. With the end of the Vietnam War, the California National Guard Office began downsizing the 146th Tactical Airlift Wing as part of a postwar drawdown.

Th Airlift Wing Participates In Emergency Extraction Exercise

The 195th Junior TAS was inactivated on 30 September 1974 with the transfer of C-130 units to the Military Airlift Command. Personnel, equipment, and aircraft of the 195th TFS were reassigned to the 115th lea TAS.

MAFFS II was first used in a firefight in July 2010[1] using the latest generation Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.[2] The 146th Airlift Wing was the first to transition to the MAFS 2 system in 2008 and remains the only unit flying the new system on the C-130J aircraft.[2]

With the end of the Korean War, the Air National Guard began receiving jet-powered aircraft. In 1953, the 195th at Van Nuys received F-86A Sabers for use on daytime interceptor missions. The 195th's F-51Hs were transferred to the 115th, now a fighter-bomber squadron;

The 115th was upgraded to the F-86A in late 1953. In 1954, the 196th FBS at Norton AFB upgraded to the F-86A and the 197th at Luke AFB to the F-86A. With the F-86A, squadrons began maintaining dusk-to-dawn alerts alongside their active-duty Air Defense Command counterparts.

Korean War Federalization

On 1 January 1954, the 196th FBS moved from the expanding Norton AFB to Ontario Municipal Airport. The 146th was redesignated on 1 July 1955 as the 146th Fighter-Interceptor Wing. He transitioned to the C-130A Hercules theater transport and flew missions in support of TAC in the United States and Alaska. In 1973, the C-130A models were transferred to the South Vietnamese Air Force and replaced by the C-130B.

During this period, 115 Squadron and its sister, 195 Tactical Airlift Squadron shared the same aircraft group. In 1958, 196 Fighter-Bomber Squadron at Ontario Airport was authorized to develop to group level. The 163d Fighter-Interceptor Group received federal authorization on 17 May;

California Air National Guard

The 196th FBS was redesignated as a fighter-interceptor squadron and transferred to the new group under the jurisdiction of the California ANG. On 2 October 1957, the 197th FBS at Luke AFB was expanded to the 161st Fighter-Interceptor Group and placed under the jurisdiction of Arizona ANG.

In 1997, members of the wing deployed more than 10,000 days in support of state and federal missions. During this period, the unit played a critical role in supporting DoD missions deployed to Oman and Saudi Arabia in support of Southern Watch, as well as peacetime humanitarian airlift and aerial firefighting in numerous missions conducted by the wing during its assignment.

The 146th is one of four C-130 ANG units that contribute to the United States' aerial firefighting capability, including equipment and techniques to effectively and efficiently suppress large wildfires from the air. Since 1974, using Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) units provided by the US Forest Service, mounted on four C-130s, the wing's firefighting aircraft have saved many lives and structures worth millions of dollars.

California and other states and countries. However, as a result of wartime aircraft use, parts were not a problem, and many of the maintenance men were WWII veterans, so training was very high, and the aircraft were often better maintained than their USAF counterparts.

In some ways, the postwar Air National Guard was almost like a flying country club, where a pilot could often show up in the field, inspect and fly a plane. However, the unit also had regular military exercises that kept it proficient and often scored better than active USAF units in gunnery and bombing competitions, most of the ANG pilots were World War II veterans.

The 146th AW's primary mission is to provide global military airlift capability to the full spectrum of state and federal agencies. Flying the Lockheed C-130J Super Hercules, the 146th provided humanitarian relief following hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and other disasters in California, the United States and internationally.

With the surprise invasion of South Korea on June 25, 1950, the bulk of the Air National Guard was federalized and put on active duty, with a complete lack of regular military training. The 146th Fighter Wing was federalized on 1 March 1951 and assigned to the Strategic Air Command.

It was redesignated the 146th Fighter-Bomber Wing and moved to Moody AFB, Georgia, where it was assigned two federalized ANG squadrons from Idaho and Montana and became an F-51D fighter-bomber training unit. The 146th Airlift Wing (146 AW) is a unit of the California Air National Guard stationed at Channel Islands Air National Guard Station in Oxnard, California.

When activated in federal service, the wing is assigned to the United States Air Force Air Mobility Command. In late October 1950, the Air National Guard was converted to a base-wing organization (Hobson Plan). Consequently, the 62d Fighter Wing was withdrawn from the California ANG and inactivated on 31 October 1950.

The 146th Composite Wing was established by the National Guard Bureau assigned to the State of California and was authorized and activated on 1 November 1950; Assumes the personnel, equipment, and mission of the deactivated 62d Fighter Wing.

In July 1944 the group moved to the mainland, where they bombarded railroads, hangars, wagons, warehouses, and other targets to prevent reinforcements from reaching the front in St. Petersburg. This is where the Allies crossed on July 25, 1944.

In August 1944, the group bombed military-like targets in the Falaise-Argentine area. During the Battle of the Bulge, from December 1944 to January 1945, the group concentrated on destroying bridges, marshalling yards and highways. In March 1945 flew reconnaissance missions in support of ground operations in the Rhine Valley, covering airfields, motor transport, etc.

The group continued tactical air operations until 4 May 1945. The 146th FBW continued to fly the F-86A until 31 March 1958. On 1 April 1958, the F-86L was modified to the Saber interceptor, which was designed from scratch.

An interceptor is all-weather capable and can be used in any weather. In addition, SAGE computer-controlled ground control interceptor (radar) sites can control and direct the F-86L, which will take the aircraft to intercept an undetected target.

The 146th TAW and its subordinate units participated in several Cold War military exercises such as Team Spirit, Volant Oak, Red Flag, and Refuge. Other Joint Chiefs of Staff exercises include "Ember Dawn IV" in Alaska and "Brave Shield" in Europe.

In 1979, the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve assumed full responsibility for airlift operations from Panama, which had recently moved to Puerto Rico, and this commitment is still being met. In December 1988, after more than six decades of Air National Guard flying tradition in the San Fernando Valley, the 146th Airlift Wing began moving from Van Nuys to a new facility, built on federal land leased from the state of California.

Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, an active Navy flight installation. During World War II, Van Nuys Airport was used as an Army airfield, and the organization moved into several buildings and hangars vacated months earlier by the 441st Army Air Force Base Unit.

The 146th Composite Group was assigned to the new division as a task group with three fighter squadrons. The 115th Bombardment Squadron (Light) at Van Nuys Airport was transferred from the 62d Fighter Wing to the new 144th Composite Wing.

The 115th was a redesignation of the prewar 115th Observation Squadron of the California Air National Guard, originating in 1917. The group flew a combat mission over Normandy on 8 May 1944. Later participated in pre-invasion operations, such as escorting B-26 Marauders to attack airfields, bridges, and railways in occupied France.

When the Allies launched the Normandy offensive on June 6, 1944, the group carried out air patrols over the beachhead and until the end of the month attacked troops, tanks, roads, fuel depots, and other targets in the offensive zone.
